bon voyage [May. 28th, 2007|08:00 am]
[Current Music |Feist - Past in Present]

i went to a conference in ottawa last week and will be leaving for a chem summer school in mexico tomorrow. ottawa was surprisingly fun! i learnt a bunch and "networked" - i.e. went out 4 nights in a row. It's really too bad they don't reimburse you for alcohol... but most importantly, I have some new research ideas to test out at some point. And the summer student in the lab seems really eager to work with me on these experiments. Maybe that means I come up with an experiment and he does the labwork? That would be cool.

I've also moved to a new neighborhood in montreal, called mile end, which is wonderful. i've only spent a couple of nights in my new apartment, but really like it. my room is so much bigger than before: i have a sitting room and a bedroom in one big space, plus the rest of the house.

and so many more changes... janicke leaving to go back home to norway... new roommates... new friends from ottawa (and soon mexico)..

snow is gone? [May. 3rd, 2007|09:57 am]
[Current Music |Josh Ritter - Beautiful Night]

Finals have been over for about 2 weeks now. I've been doing random odds and ends, getting more sleep, and being more social again. Not really doing labwork yet, but am reading about the research in the lab. It always starts off a little slow.

A couple interesting things lately have been a clothing exchange/potluck and hiking in the laurentian mountains (north of montreal). I got lots of fun clothes for free! And met more interesting folks. The hiking was funny cos there's still snow on top of the mountains here and we ended up running down the ski slopes. Janicke and I pretended we were downhill skiing. It was hilarious. Hmmm... I really should start skiing next winter. There's so many good hills within a hour drive of montreal.

I really should do some work. I feel so lazy though.

mexico [Apr. 18th, 2007|03:51 pm]

Like 2 months ago I applied for a green chemistry summer program in Mexico City. Finally, they let me that my application has been accepted today! Yay! I've never been to Mexico before... And the green chem program looks really interesting too, with emphasis on sustainability this year.

The kicker is that if you scroll down to the bottom of the link, there's a link to the program sponsors, one of which being Exxon Mobil. Yup, a real "green" company there... But I'll still take their money. I'm just a grad student after all.

phew! colloid chem is finished. my prof for that class is so brilliant that it was scary. I learned a lot even if it was intimidating. now it's time to celebrate, and then start studying for the next one. almost done.

physics makes us all its bitches [Apr. 7th, 2007|12:18 pm]
[Current Music |Of Montreal - Gronlandic Edit]

hey! only 2 weeks left til "summer"! until then too much work to do. i think my group presentation on microbial fuel cells last week, we overwhelmed the class with knowledge. hmmm.. maybe i'm working too hard. but i've still made time to go out at least once a week! we've been in a phase lately of going to cheap francophone bars, which look like surburbanite bars with molson beer flags and fake wood tables and pool tables and fuseball and play hits from the 90's (oh, high school nostalgia). and have cheap beer. one of the bars advertized that they have sterilized glasses! yes! classy! though, it's kinda laziness on our part, cos we live in the francophone side of town and don't want to take a taxi home at 3 in the morning. plus, the best poutine spot is near the house. and it is kinda nice not to always get dressed up when i go out and not to spend a shitload on the microbrews or mixed drinks. hmmm... this city will be awesome when springtime finally happens and finals are over. it's already starting to burst with energy. it'll be explosive this summer!
